Shani Diluka takes us on a musical journey through this formative historical era, a time when the arts inspired one another and early humanists strove for harmony and universality - symbolised by Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man and the Golden Ratio, which also resonates in music.
This album focuses on the two most important musical centres of the Renaissance:
· The English Renaissance during the Elizabethan era, with works for virginal and lute, as well as music from the Reformation period, some of it preserved through oral tradition.
· The Italian Renaissance, shaped by the captivating polyphony of Palestrina and the poignant beauty of Monteverdi - a “music of the spheres” transformed into the music of humanity.
This pivotal chapter in European music history influenced great composers such as Scarlatti, Handel, and even Beethoven, who was himself fascinated by Palestrina’s genius.
With her finely tuned sense for connecting past and present, Shani Diluka opens a new sonic exploration of the spirit of the great humanists and the music of the Renaissance - performed on the modern piano.
